A New York jazz musician in SLC
Alan Braufman’s 50-year career in jazz started in New York, where he made his name in the “free jazz” movement, where solo improvisation is more common. For the last 30 years, though, Braufman’s been living in Salt Lake City. In recent years, interest in his landmark 1975 debut album, “Valley of Search,” led to him recording “The Fire Still Burns” in 2020 and this year’s “Infinite Love Infinite Tears.” Braufman will perform from the new album for the first time in Salt Lake City, Friday at The State Room, 638 S. State St., Salt Lake City. Cherry Thomas is the supporting act. Show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at thestateroompresents.com.

A big (and furry) movie star
The life of one of Utah’s biggest movie stars — Bart the Bear — will be celebrated Friday and Saturday at the Avon Theatre, 94 S. Main St., Heber City. Bart (1977-2000) was a Kodiak bear, trained by Doug and Lynne Seus, who appeared in such movies as “Legends of the Fall” and “The Edge” (sharing screen time with Anthony Hopkins in both). Friday’s events start at 5 p.m., with the dedication of a mural of Bart painted by Chris Peterson, and a screening of the 2005 Robert Redford movie “An Unfinished Life” (which featured Bart’s successor, Bart II). Saturday’s events go all day, and include screenings of three of Bart’s movies: “The Great Outdoors” (1988), “The Giant of Thunder Mountain” (1990) and “The Bear” (1988). Lynne Seus will sign copies of her book, “The Grizzlies and Us,” and the Seuses and bear preservationist Doug Peacock will talk about Bart. Tickets for the Avon are available at hebervalleyentertainment.com.
