Indian restaurant reopens in a new Salt Lake City location, months after a break-in forced it to close

Eventually, Star of India will have two SLC locations: one on North Temple, and one on Main Street.

A Salt Lake City restaurant is open again, after a destructive break-in forced it to close down last August.

Star of India opened its new location at 1000 S. Main St., Suite 102, in Salt Lake City on Monday. The restaurant’s owners had to close their previous location on North Temple, in the old Ramada hotel, after thieves stole crucial wiring from the building, causing a power outage.

“We are grateful to all our loyal customers and appreciate your patience while we have worked hard to get back on our feet,” said a message on the restaurant’s website.

Last summer, Star of India owner Paramjit Kaur told The Salt Lake Tribune that they had plans to reopen in the under-construction SPARK! mixed-use development at 1500 W. North Temple. That plan still stands, which means Star of India will eventually end up with two locations: one on the west side, and one on Main Street.

A spokesperson for the Larry H. Miller Company, which owns the Ramada hotel, said crews are 90% done with demolishing the building. The site will be part of the future Power District master plan, the spokesperson said.

One change diners at Star of India may notice is that the restaurant no longer offers a lunch buffet, according to its website.
