A popular Salt Lake City butcher shop will close after one last holiday season

“Very sad for our city,” one person in Utah’s food community said of Beltex Meats’ announced closure.

After more than a decade in business, an acclaimed Salt Lake City butcher shop is going out of business — but not before regulars can order their holiday meat offerings.

Beltex Meats, at 511 E. 900 South, near Liberty Park, announced on its Instagram account (@beltexmeats) that it will close after Dec. 23, when the last of the shop’s Christmas orders are fulfilled.

“Our goal was simple: To show people just how incredible locally raised meats in Utah can be,” read the Instagram post, which featured a photo of Beltex Meats’ owner and butcher, Phillip Grubisa.

“Thanks to an immense amount of hard work and the amazing support we’ve received over the years, we’ve been able to accomplish incredible things,” the post continued. “Our incredible employees, ranchers, farmers, growers of all kinds, and of course, our customers have made this place truly special in our city.”

Reaction on Instagram, particularly from those in Utah’s food industry, was sorrowful.

• Matt Caputo, owner of Caputo’s Market and Deli, wrote in a comment that Beltex’s announcement “is very sad for our city and frankly for our modern day society as a whole.”

• Matt Baydala, owner of Yuki Yama Sushi in Park City, commented that, “You guys have always been amazing. Your quality and creativity is unmatched! … Your food has meant so much more than just satisfying craving. It’s been the focal point around so many great memories and friendships!”

• Rebekah Abrams, a personal chef who operates Rebekah’s Kitchen in Park City, wished Grubisa and his crew well. “We hope you find a new way to share your knowledge and passion with the SLC (and hopefully Park City) food community,” Abrams wrote.

Beltex will start taking online orders for holiday meats on Oct. 15, the shop said in its Instagram post.
