A beloved modern American restaurant in Salt Lake City is closing

“We tried hard to keep it open for you wonderful people but couldn’t do it,” SLC Eatery posted on Instagram.

A beloved modern American restaurant in Salt Lake City is closing, and several other food and drink establishments have expressed dismay at the news.

SLC Eatery, at 1017 S. Main St., announced last week on Instagram that it would be closing its doors at the end of September. It held its final brunch on Sunday.

“We tried hard to keep it open for you wonderful people but couldn’t do it,” the post said. “This was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make.”

The post didn’t specify when the last night of service will be. It did say that the restaurant will remain open for another month to allow the staff to find new work, and to give people the chance to come in and dine one last time.

People at the restaurant did not respond to a request for comment.

Award-winning Japanese restaurant Takashi commented on SLC Eatery’s post, saying, “Always loved what you do, the wonderful food, plating, service, everything you do is so well thought out and on point. You will be missed, but I hope this leads to great new opportunities for you.”

Popular brewery Fisher Brewing Company also commented, and said, “So sorry to see this. Amazing food, service, and place every time we went. Thanks for the great experiences and memories.”

SLC Eatery’s post did not provide a specific reason for the closure, but it did hint at some hardship.

“This has been an absolute pleasure to feed you and be a part of such a wonderful food scene here in Salt Lake,” the post said. “We hope you will frequent the places you love as we know most independent restaurants are struggling hard, even if they don’t seem like it. Hit the chains a little less.”

The Instagram post also said that SLC Eatery hopes to keep doing private events, supper clubs, pop-ups and perhaps lunch at its current location. Follow SLC Eatery on Instagram at @slceatery for updates.

SLC Eatery’s menu focuses on locally sourced ingredients and frequently changes. Its chefs Paul Chamberlain and Logen Crew were semifinalists in the “best chef” category of the prestigious James Beard Awards in 2023 for the Mountain region.
