Where to party on Utah’s alternative Pioneer Day, aka Pie and Beer Day

A pub crawl is being organized, and and many local breweries are celebrating in their own way.

If the whole Days of ’47 Parade scene just isn’t your “thing,” but you still feel like making merry in Utah on July 24, blow off Pioneer Day and celebrate Pie and Beer Day instead.

The 10-year-old Official Pie and Beer Day, planned for Salt Lake City’s Beer Bar, was abruptly canceled Thursday afternoon — but other options are available.

If you feel like trekking a bit to get your drink on, put on your best prairie attire, make like the pioneers, and participate in the first annual Pioneer Trail: A Pie and Beer Day Pub Crawl.

This sprawling, multibar event starts at 4 p.m. and goes until 11. The first “supply stop” is at The Ruin, at 159 S. Main St. There, during check-in from 4 to 6 p.m., you’ll get your “passport,” which you need to get stamped four times in order to qualify for a drawing for prizes at the end. (The Ruin counts as your first stamp.)

Travel to the different supply stops to get stamps and “spin for your fate,” where, in the style of the old computer game “The Oregon Trail,” you can experience outcomes like drowning and dysentery (you really just have to drink a random alcoholic or nonalcoholic drink).

The other “supply stops” include:

All the bars are meant to be accessed via TRAX. For your final stamp, make your way to Quarters in Sugar House, where you can get a ticket for a drawing for prizes at 10 p.m., plus get $5 off pizza pies. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased on 24tix.com.
