Here are 5 ice cream treats to beat the heat in SLC

The summer heat is here, and what better way to beat that heat than to slurp on an ice cream cone? Salt Lake City is full of ice cream shops, and here are five that I particularly like. (I’m not a purist, so yes, there is gelato and sorbet included on this list.)

Doki Doki, 249 E. 400 South, Salt Lake City, 385-229-4339; 149 N. State St., Orem, 801-960-9281 • This Japanese dessert shop sells cute and tasty taiyaki sundaes (pictured above) that you can customize according to your cravings. Taiyaki is a sweet Japanese fish-shaped cake that is served warm, stuck into the top of your sundae. Choose your taiyaki filling (can’t go wrong with Nutella), ice cream flavors, sauce flavor and toppings for your own creation. Visit the new Orem location for Doki Doki’s famous souffle fluffy pancakes.

Rockwell Ice Cream, 115 Regent St., Suite 115 A, Salt Lake City, 801-359-4210; 43 N. University Ave., Provo, 801-318-5950 • Both locations of this ice cream shop are light and airy, and the downtown SLC location has a second floor for seating. The G.O.A.T. — with a goat cheese base and blackberry, lemon jam swirls and honey rosemary roasted almonds — is award-winning, but my favorite flavor is the Rockwell Road, made with dark chocolate ice cream, almond brittle and marshmallow swirls.

Dolcetti Gelato, 902 E. 900 South, Salt Lake City, 801-485-3254 • Between the art on the walls, the chandeliers and decor on the ceiling, and the shadowbox tables, there’s a whole lot to look at in this cute sweets shop. The menu features gelato, pastries, espresso and coffee, and tea. For a well-balanced gelato combination, try Turkish coffee with coconut sticky rice, which gets an interesting texture from bits of actual sticky rice.

Cloud Ninth Creamery, 928 E. 900 South, Salt Lake City, 801-328-8436 • Locals know that this ice cream shop is around only during the summer; in November and December, it transforms into a candy shop. There’s no seating inside; Cloud Ninth Creamery lends itself well to buying an ice cream cone to walk around with. For a dairy-free option that’s still rich, try the zingy and refreshing raspberry lime sorbet.

Hatch Family Chocolates, 376 Eighth Ave., Salt Lake City, 801-532-4912 • Hatch Family Chocolates might be better known for their hand-dipped confections, but they have a variety of frozen items on their menu, too. There’s affogato (a single scoop of ice cream with espresso poured over the top), frozen hot chocolate, ice cream floats, sundaes, milkshakes and more, all made with Hatch’s housemade ice cream. My favorite flavor is the aptly named “Chocolate, It’s Epic.”

Wine Spectator has announced the winners of its 2024 Restaurant Awards, which honor the best restaurants that pride themselves on their wine service. More than two dozen Utah restaurants are on the list, including Courchevel Bistro in Park City, Veneto Ristorante Italiano (pictured above) in Salt Lake City, BTG Wine Bar in Salt Lake City, Painted Pony Restaurant in St. George, Spotted Dog Cafe in Springdale and many more. Openings:

Early Owl, at 155 E. 900 South, Suite 101, in Salt Lake City’s Maven District, is having its grand opening until Friday, according to a representative for the business hub. This spot next to Lovebound Library serves breakfast/brunch dishes like shakshuka, scrambles, fruit bowls, salad bowls and fancy toasts.

Blind Rabbit Kitchen, at 1080 E. 2100 South, in Sugar House, is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday at 5 p.m., according to an Instagram post. There will be live music and bite-size tasting.

Booze (and Drink!) News

Holy Water Coffee, at 712 E. 100 South in Salt Lake City, is celebrating its first year in business with a party on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. There will be food trucks and music, as well as, of course, delicious coffee.

Spencer’s for Steak and Chops, at 255 S. West Temple in Salt Lake City, inside the Hilton Salt Lake City Center hotel, has unveiled its new Summer Sizzle cocktail menu, according to a news release. This seasonal menu will be available through Sept. 20, and includes concoctions like the Beach Breeze ($16), made with Campari, Ketel One vodka, strawberry puree, prosecco and fresh orange juice.

Dish of the Week

• Oh, Central 9th Market breakfast sandwich, where have you been all my life?! OK, so it’s not the most photogenic sando, but that doesn’t matter. I got mine with sausage, a fried egg and cheese, and all of these elements combined with the lovingly blistered focaccia to form a flavor bomb that had me saying, “How did they do this?” as I ate it.

The salt level was perfect, the spice from the sausage was a nice surprise, and the cheese and runny yolk were decadent. The world stopped spinning as I devoured this sandwich.
