Ending months of rumors, Trader Joe’s has announced it’s opening a new grocery store in Salt Lake City’s Sugar House neighborhood.
The new store — the company’s fifth in Utah — is set to open sometime this year at 2160 S. 700 East in Salt Lake City. The building previously housed a Pep Boys auto parts store and is on the same block as a Dee’s restaurant.
“We’ve consulted our maps and compass and have found a terrific location for a store in Salt Lake City,” Trader Joe’s announced Friday on its website. No opening date has been announced.
The supermarket chain, known for such store brands as Speculoos Cookie Butter and Joe-Joe’s sandwich cookies, now has four locations in Utah: Orem, Cottonwood Heights, Draper and on 400 South in Salt Lake City.
Rumors of a Sugar House location started circulating last October, when a commercial building permit was filed for the location. The project description listed that the site was “in prescreening; converting location to a Trader Joe’s grocery store.” The company declined to confirm the rumors at the time.
Speculation over Trader Joe’s openings often builds in ways that rarely happen with other company’s stores.
Rumors circulated for months before the Draper store’s location was confirmed in October 2022; that store opened in 2023. While the Draper talk was happening, there were rumors — which so far have proved false — of the company looking at a spot in Salt Lake City’s Brickyard neighborhood.
