Christmas in October? A Utah radio station is already playing holiday music, because ‘there’s a demand’

The station broke its own record for getting an early start on the Christmas carols.

It’s barely been a week since the start of fall, and one Utah radio station has broken out the Christmas music.

KLO, 103.1 FM, licensed out of Coalville and serving much of northern Utah, kicked off its “Christmas 103” holiday music playlist Monday, Sept. 28 — and will play everything from Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” to José Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad” through December.

“People are pretty excited about Christmas music,” Rob Riesen, program director for KLO and sister station Now 97.9, said Wednesday. “We realize it’s early again, but there’s a demand for it, and we want to give our listeners what they want.”

Last year, KLO started playing holiday music on Oct. 7, providing a three-month break between planned format changes.

That’s because in fall 2025, the station decided to discontinue its classic alternative music format (known as “The Wave”).

Once the holiday season ended, the station instead debuted its new “soft adult contemporary” (sometimes called “yacht rock”) format, called “Coast 103.1.”

“Coast” will pick up again after the Christmas season.

“Coast 103.1,” Riesen said, “is working out pretty good. It’s a tight radio market. There’s a lot of competition, and we just keep plugging away.”

Among stations in the Salt Lake City/Provo/Ogden listening area, KLO ranks 24th, according to August Nielsen ratings reported on the industry website RadioInsight, with a market share of 0.5 — meaning one-half of 1% of radio listeners tune in to the station.

The Christmas radio giant in Utah, KSFI-FM, FM100.3, traditionally waits until mid-November to start playing holiday music.
