AIDS and the arts
Since 1988, December 1 has been designated World AIDS Day, to mark the progress being made to battle HIV and the need to prevent new infections and help those living with HIV. The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is marking the occasion by taking part in Day With(out) Art, in which art museums and galleries close their doors or shroud their artworks, to symbolize the losses to the world’s art community caused by AIDS. This year, UMFA will shroud John D. McLaughlin’s “#21-1958,” in the Global Contemporary gallery. On Wednesday, from 6 to 8 p.m., UMFA will screen “Red Reminds Me…,” a series of seven videos “reflecting the emotional spectrum of living with HIV today.” The screening is free, and includes historian presentations and a post-screening discussion. UMFA is located at 410 Campus Center Drive, Salt Lake City, on the University of Utah campus.
