Get ready for more secrets and more dirty sodas. “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” will get a second season.
The Hulu docuseries that profiled the Utah women behind the #MomTok phenomenon debuted Sept. 6 with eight episodes. The Hollywood Reporter, an entertainment industry trade publication, wrote Thursday that Hulu will release 20 episodes for the second season, with an unknown number of episodes to be released next spring.
TMZ is credited with first reporting the new season on Wednesday.
The show became instantly popular, The Hollywood Reporter said, and was the first Hulu unscripted series to chart on Nielsen’s streaming rankings.
The #MomTok phenomenon began in 2020, as a group of Latter-day Saint moms came together to create and post videos poking fun at their faith. The influencers’ clips went viral, and their follower counts grew — until a 2022 “soft swinging” scandal brought things to a screeching halt.
The show has drawn criticism from Latter-day Saints, who have said the #MomTok women are not representative of the church and its members. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints itself issued a rare “commentary” — without naming any specific show — denouncing the distortions of the faith in the “entertainment industry.”
The series also has refueled national interest in dirty sodas — mixes of soda with cream or flavored syrups — which are a mainstay of the show’s cast.
“The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” has also prompted comparisons to Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City,” which launched in 2020 and started its fifth season in September. The website Distractify noted some crossover between the shows, when “Real Housewives” cast member Lisa Barlow posted on Instagram that she ran into “Secret Lives” castmate Demi Engemann at a Salt Lake City bar in September.
