After being booted from its home in Sandy at the The Shops at South Town, a sustainable art exhibit will have a homecoming in downtown Salt Lake City.
Dreamscapes is set to return to The Gateway mall, marking the art exhibit’s fourth move in five years. It previously spent two years in Sandy.
Derek Dyer, the executive director of the Utah Arts Alliance said in a news release that he is “incredibly excited” about the move back to the Gateway.
“[It’s] the place where our immersive art journey first began in 2019,” Dyer said.
Dreamscapes was asked to vacate its spot in the Sandy mall in May after Smith Entertainment Group announced it was buying the property to build a practice facility for its new National Hockey franchise.
The group, led by Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith, announced in August that it had acquired the mall “in its totality.” The practice facility, set to be completed in 2025, will be permanently located on the southeast end of the property.
Dreamscapes occupied a 35,000 square-foot space in Sandy, in what used to be a Macy’s department store. In the past, the Utah Arts Alliance has stated that Dreamscapes is Salt Lake County’s number one partner in recycling. Dreamscapes uses recycled materials to create its immersive art experience. Every item has been repurposed.
In May, Dyer described Dreamscapes’ departure from Sandy as “collateral damage.”
An official reopening date for Dreamscapes will be announced in the future, but the group is starting a fundraising campaign to help with the moving and rebuilding costs, which, according to the release, is “likely to exceed $200,000.”
“Dreamscapes is more than just an attraction; it’s a vital part of our community,” Dyer said in the release, “providing a platform for artists to showcase their creativity and innovation ...”
