Midvale • The Utah High School Activities board of directors started the complicated process of realigning high school athletic teams into classifications and regions for the 2015-2017 school years Thursday and came up with preliminary proposals for the six football classifications and five classifications for all other sports.
Officials stressed that these are preliminary recommendations. There will be a public hearing on Dec. 3 at the UHSAA offices, with the proposal finalized on Dec. 4.
Under the proposal, Mountain Crest, Sky View, Roy and Clearfield would move up to 5A from 4A. Jordan, Hillcrest and Alta would drop from 5A to 4A. Orem and Judge would be assigned to 3A, while American Preparatory and Providence would be new 2A schools, and Parowan and Merit Academy would drop to 1A.
Alignment is based on student numbers as verified by the Utah State Board of Education. Some schools could be on the bubble, meaning they could be assigned to one classification or the other.
The biggest fight Thursday was where to put Juab, Delta or Union in the new 3A football alignment. The initial proposal has Juab moving into a league with Summit, Grantsville, Judge, Morgan, American Leadership Academy and Juan Diego.
Under the process, schools can comment and apply to move up or down a classification at the public hearing. Now that the initial proposal is out, some schools can be expected to apply for different status.
Among the big questions will be whether Orem wants to move to 3A — according to its numbers — or stay in 4A. Judge and Juan Diego will move into a region for both football and other sports, with Judge dropping to 3A from 4A.
Last time around, Judge asked to be placed in 4A except in football, where it has won two straight 3A football titles.
Logan, Wasatch, Ben Lomond and Payson are on the bubble for moving from 4A to 3A. Desert Hills, Orem and Snow Canyon are on the bubble to move from 3A up to 4A.
There are 28 schools in 5A, 28 in 4A, 21 in 3A, 24 in 2A and 29 in 1A. —
