This sound familiar? Utah's MyKayla Skinner earns Pac-12 gymnast of the week honors

Utah’s MyKayla Skinner practically owned the Pac-12 gymnast of the week award last year.

Looks like the Ute sophomore is picking right up where she left off.

Fresh off her performance in the Utes’ season-opening win over BYU, the Pac-12 on Tuesday named Skinner the conference’s gymnast of the week for the eighth time in her career. That places Skinner second in Pac-12 history, putting her behind only UCLA’s Vanessa Zamarripa, who earned the honor nine times between 2009-13.

Skinner has eight in a little over one season.

Last year as a freshman, Skinner set Pac-12single-season records for Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week (7) and Freshman of the Week (6) awards.

Skinner’s three victories last Friday against BYU led Utah to the third-highest season-opening score in school history and a 197.000-194.275 win.

She tied for first in the all-around with teammate MaKenna Merrell-Giles (39.475) and won bars (9.90) and beam (9.90). Skinner’s scores in the all-around, bars, beam and vault (9.875) all ranked in the top 10 in the country on opening week and helped Utah rise to No. 2 in the latest national rankings.
