Scoring more points against Iowa State on its home turf than any other team in history wasn't good enough in the eyes of the voters for the Utah Utes to keep their spot in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.
The Utes (5-0), who thumped the Cyclones 68-27 Saturday, slipped from No. 10 to No. 11 in the AP poll released Sunday. The Utes maintained their No. 10 ranking in the USA Today coaches poll.
The Utes failed to move up despite losses by top-ranked Alabama and No. 9 Arizona.
Alabama lost to South Carolina 35-21 and slipped to No. 8 in the poll while the Gamecocks moved up nine spots to No. 10.
It was the first loss for the Tide since losing to Utah in the 2009 Sugar Bowl, a streak of 19 games.
Ohio State took the top spot for the first time since 2007 and was followed by Oregon and Boise State in both polls. TCU is No. 4 in the AP poll and No. 5 in the coaches poll following its 45-0 win over Wyoming.
The other team making a big move in the poll was LSU, which moved up three spots to No. 9 after beating then-No. 12 Florida, 34-29. The Gators plunged 10 spots to No. 22.
The Utes said after beating Iowa State that the victory was a statement game for them as they believed voters would finally recognize them as a legitimate Top 10 team.
However, that respect might not come until the Utes get to the last half of their schedule when they play at Air Force on Oct. 30, against TCU on Nov. 6 and at Notre Dame on Nov. 13.
Air Force, which broke into the AP poll last week, moved up to No. 23 in both polls following its 49-27 win over CSU.
Earlier in the week Utah coach Kyle Whittingham noted how the rankings aren't always a good reflection of his team's performance and said the Utes shouldn't be bothered by what goes on in the polls because there is so much football left to play.
"There are so many things that can transpire, but the polls don't make a lot of sense sometimes," he said. "We are idle and move up two or three and the week before we win and move up one. There isn't a lot of rhyme or reason as to what goes on."
Miami dropped out of both polls following its 45-17 loss to Florida State.
Ohio State received 34 first-place votes in the AP poll while Oregon (15), Boise State (8), TCU (1) and Oklahoma (2) also received first-place votes.
The first Bowl Championship Series standings will be released Oct. 17 on ESPN.
