Cedar City • Cedar City coach John Elison had a plan to stop Carbon, and his team executed it almost to perfection Thursday night as Cedar took a 43-29 victory in the Class 3A girls' basketball quarterfinals.

Cedar all but took away Carbon's outside game, holding normally reliable Dino guard Katie Bassinger scoreless.

Despite a strong inside game from Shelby Cornforth, who finished with 12 points, the Dinos had no answers.

"We held them to 12 at the half and we had a strong defensive presence," said Elison, whose team finished fourth in Region 9 and now faces the difficult task of facing league champion Desert Hills in Friday's 2:30 p.m. semifinals.

Carbon coach Ted Bianco credited Cedar City for its defensive game plan.

"We didn't shoot the ball very well tonight and Cedar City took some things away from us that we like to do," he said. "They put a big guard on Katie Bassinger and it affected the way we run our offense a little bit. They hit the big shots when they needed them and we couldn't answer. But the big thing is we couldn't get much outside. They did a good job stopping our guards."

Carbon, the third-place team from Region 12, led much of the first quarter. But Lisa Ballenger led a 12-0 run by Cedar City in the second quarter that turned a 9-9 tie game into a 21-9 contest before the half.

The closest the Dinos would get after that would be nine points.

Javlyn Weaver led Cedar with 13 points while Ballenger and Courtney Morley each had 10. Morley had a particularly good second half, scoring nine points in the fourth quarter to keep Carbon at bay.

"Our effort changed everything," Morley said. "We have great girls that can get out and hustle how they [the coaches] wanted us to."

As for Desert Hills, Morley said she and her teammates will be dreaming about the team that beat Cedar City twice in the regular season.

Desert Hills 57, Juab 29 • This was over early as the tall and talented Thunder roared out to a 19-1 lead and never looked back. Mackenzie Done led Desert Hills with 17 while Blair Bliss added 12. Ally Nelson scored 14 for the Wasps.

North Sanpete 48, Hurricane 37 • The Region 12 champion Hawks survived a brutal Hurricane press to improve to 19-3. Taylor Gordon led the Hawks with 16 points while Jacey Dunn had 11.

Morgan 61, Stansbury 24 • Rashel Blazzard scored 17 points as the Trojans (22-1) rolled in the late game. —
