Baylee Nielsen scored two goals to lead the University of Utah women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Western Kentucky in its season opener in Bowling Green, Ky.
Nilesen scored off a corner kick from Avery Ford in the 22nd minute, then drilled a 20-yarder just over the Hilltopper keeper's fingers in the 46th minute.
Lindsey Luke made three saves and earned the shutout.
"Our team showed a log of maturity, and we played the way we wanted to play," coach Rich Manning said. " We stretched WKU out and took the most of our opportunities."
The Utes stay east for a game at Kentucky on Sunday at 11 a.m. MDT.
BYU 3, Cal State-Fullerton 1 • Rachel Manning scored twice, and Ashley Hatch added a goal as the Cougars won their season opener in Provo.
BYU attempted 14 shots on goal to only four for the Titans.
Weber State 3, Idaho State 0 • The Wildcats outshot the Vandals 27-2 to cruise to an easy season-opening victory in Ogden.Stacy Bair, Sara Thurston and Mackenzie Day scored goals for Weber State, and Ryan Waldmann earned her 14th career shutout.
Utah State 3, Creighton 0 • The Aggies scored their three goals in the first 33 minutes to cruise past the Bluejays in Logan.
Lauren Roundy, Kylie Dibb and Jessica Brooksby scored USU's goals, and Jeannie Woller earned the shutout in the Ags' season opener.
Women's volleyball
Salt Lake Community College • SLCC split its first two matches of the season at the Reiver Classic in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
The Bruins lost to Iowa Western Community College 25-20, 18-25, 21-25, 25-17, 15-7, then defeated San Jacinto Valley College 25-19, 22-25, 25-14, 25-15.
Bailee Kendall led SLCC in its victory with 17 kills and 4 blocks.
