NFL • The Kansas City Chiefs announced Monday that they agreed on a five-year deal with receiver Dwayne Bowe, signed punter Dustin Colquitt to a new contract, and placed the franchise tag on left tackle Branden Albert. All three of the players were due to become free agents.

The moves come less than a week after new Chiefs general manager John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid acquired former University of Utah quarterback Alex Smith from the San Francisco 49ers for their second-round pick in this year's draft and a conditional selection in next year's draft.

Bowe was the recipient of the franchise tag last year. He was unhappy with the decision and didn't report to training camp until it was well under way, but still managed to catch 59 passes for 801 yards and three touchdowns despite weak quarterback play.

• The NFL deadline for placing franchise tags on players has passed, with only eight given the tag by their teams for next season. Along with Kansas City's Albert, Dallas linebacker/defensive end Anthony Spencer and Miami defensive tackle Randy Starks were tagged Monday.

The other tagged players are Buffalo safety Jairus Byrd, Chicago defensive tackle Henry Melton, Cincinnati defensive end Michael Johnson, Denver offensive tackle Ryan Clady and Indianapolis punter Pat McAfee.

With the non-exclusive franchise tag, a player's team has the right to match any offer sheet, or get two first-round draft picks in return for allowing him to leave.

NRA puts nameon Sprint Cup race

AUTO RACING • The National Rifle Association will be the title sponsor for next month's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway, the track announced Monday. The April 13 race will be known as the NRA 500. The deal comes at a time when the NRA is involved in a renewed debate on gun violence in the wake of the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

This is not the NRA's first title sponsorship in NASCAR. The group sponsored a Nationwide race at Atlanta last September, the NRA American Warrior 300.

Whitecaps captain ruptures Achilles

SOCCER • Vancouver Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit has ruptured his Achilles tendon and will be out indefinitely. The center back played the first seven minutes of Vancouver's season-opening 1-0 victory over Toronto FC on Saturday before leaving with the injury. The 33-year-old DeMerit is from Green Bay, Wis., and in his third year with the Whitecaps. He was coming off an All-Star season in 2012. He started 31 of Vancouver's 32 and helped lead the club to its first appearance in the MLS Cup playoffs.

• David Beckham will play in an all-star game in China this year as part of a deal to help raise soccer's profile in the world's most populous country. Fans in China should get a chance to see Beckham play in a team against China's best players in November, five months after his current contract with PSG expires. If a new PSG deal is agreed beyond the end of this season, the midfielder will ask for permission to make the trip.
