college football • BYU has added Nevada to its 2013 football schedule and dropped Hawaii.

The Cougars will visit Nevada on Nov. 30 in the first leg of a three-game series announced Monday that includes two games at LaVell Edwards Stadium: in 2014 and 2019.

New Mountain West Conference member Hawaii had to cancel a Dec. 7 matchup with BYU because that date conflicts with the inaugural MWC championship game. The scheduled 2014 game in Provo has also been canceled. The schools have agreed to "look at" scheduling a future series.

BYU will host Utah on Sept. 21, and visit Utah State on Oct. 4.

U.S., Canada playto scoreless draw

soccer • The United States prepped for its opening game in the final round of World Cup qualifying with a dull 0-0 tie against Canada on Tuesday night in Houston as defender Omar Gonzalez returned to the American national team lineup after a two-year absence. U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann changed all 11 starters from November's 2-2 tie at Russia and is likely to change the entire lineup again for the Feb. 6 qualifier against Honduras at San Pedro Sula. Gonzalez was the senior member of the backline. The 6-foot-5 Los Angeles Galaxy center back made his third international appearance. The U.S. started an all-Major League Soccer lineup, including Real Salt Lake's Kyle Beckerman and Tony Beltran.
