Utah State and BYU will postpone their men's basketball game scheduled for Wednesday night after Aggies player Danny Berger collapsed and his heart stopped during practice on Tuesday afternoon in Logan, The Salt Lake Tribune has learned.
Sources close to the program confirmed the game would be delayed late Tuesday night following a school release saying the status of the game was "not known."
Berger, a junior forward, was standing by himself during the session at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum when he collapsed, lost consciousness and stopped breathing.
The school's athletic training staff performed CPR and used an automatic external defibrillator to revive Berger. An ambulance arrived, and emergency responders took him to a local hospital before electing to fly him to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.
A hospital spokesman confirmed Berger had arrived, but could not offer details on his condition. USU, however, said Berger was in "stable but critical condition" in its news release.
Berger's sister, Lauren Berger posted on Facebook on Tuesday night: "Things are looking up for Danny as of now. He's at the SLC hospital now. Everyone keep him in your prayers please."
Some teammates and family came down to Murray on Tuesday night, and the team was expecting to visit Berger on Wednesday.
Berger, 22, is a starter at forward for the 4-1 Aggies, who had planned to travel Tuesday in preparation for a Wednesday rivalry game at BYU. A Medford, Ore., native, Berger averages 7.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game this season for the team.
