The Woodlands, Texas • U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin shot a 6-under-par 66 Friday for a one-shot lead after the first round of the Champions Tour's Administaff Small Business Classic.
Pavin didn't play golf for a 45-day period while serving as the Ryder team captain. He returned two weeks ago and tied for 57th in the Senior Players Championships and then rested last week.
Pavin started fast with a 4-foot birdie putt on the first hole and had long birdie putts of 12 feet at No. 5 and 25 feet at No. 7 to make the turn 3 under.
He kept his putter working with 12-foot birdies at Nos. 10 and 11. He missed a 7-foot putt on No. 14 for a bogey, but recovered with birdie putts on Nos. 15 and 18. He also had a par-saving 6-foot putt on No. 17.
Mark Wiebe birdied three of the final six holes for a 67 in a steady round that included five birdies and no bogeys. Two more shots back was Russ Cochran, who had to overcome back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 8 and 9.
Ten other players, including defending Charles Schwab Cup champion Loren Roberts, finished with 2-under 70s.
PGA
Jonathan Byrd shot an 8-under 63 on Friday at rain-softened TPC Summerlin to take the second-round lead at 13 under in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open at Las Vegas.
Byrd, seeking his fourth PGA Tour title, had nine birdies and a bogey in perfect scoring conditions in the fourth of five Fall Series events.
Ryuji Imada was a stroke back after a 62. Imada had an eagle, eight birdies and a bogey.
Defending champion Martin Laird (62), Alex Prugh (64), John Senden (67), George McNeill (66) and Nicholas Thompson (66) were two strokes back at 11 under. Ryder Cup player Rickie Fowler (64) topped a group at 10 under, and U.S. teammate Hunter Mahan was 7 under after a 68.
LPGA
Japan's Mika Miyazato and South Korea's Jee Young Lee shot 5-under 66s in steamy conditions Friday to share the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia lead at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, while Michelle Wie opened with a 68 in the round that was delayed for three hours because of lightning.
Wie, the Canadian Women's Open winner in late August, birdied three of her first five holes and reached 4 under with a birdie on No. 10, but she dropped a stroke with a three-putt bogey on the 15th, a par 3. —
