Utah's legal defense of traditional marriage, citing the value of reproduction and the fear of a declining birthrate, is really stupid ("State makes it all about kids in case against gay marriage," Tribune, Feb. 4).

First, the state apparently can't afford to adequately educate the current child population. Second, the current Utah population contributes more pollution than is safe to breathe. Third, the state struggles to keep up with maintainence of its current roads, streets and highways.

Is not the real reason for pushing for the birth of more babies connected to ensuring a continual increase of Mormons to replace the huge number of youth and adults leaving the church?
