A Tooele boy died Friday after he hit was hit by a garbage truck.

The 5-year-old boy, Giacomo Riley Kelly, and his sister were riding their bikes alongside the truck at the time, said Tooele police Capt. Paul Wimmer.

The children had a rapport with the driver and typically rode parallel to him on the sidewalk, as they were doing at about 1 p.m. Friday, Wimmer said.

But this time, when the driver turned right at the intersection of 680 West and McKellar Street, Giacomo continued straight instead of turning with the truck and it ran over him, Wimmer said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"It was in a manner that didn't give the truck driver any opportunity to react," Wimmer said. "He just assumed the children would make the turn on the sidewalk."
