Three people and three cats are without a home after a two-alarm house fire in Kearns.
Firefighters responded to 911 calls at 3:15 p.m. to find a flames and smoke coming from a house near 5400 S. Tropicana Drive (3350 West), as well as some flames that had jumped to the house directly west of it, said Unified Fire Capt. Clint Mecham.
Firefighters made sure everyone, including three cats, were evacuated and then went inside the first home to put out the flames. The fires were out about 25 minutes later, but not before a structure-bearing wall of the first home was damaged and its roof collapsed and the second home had siding damage, Mecham said.
One of the three adults who lived in the first home and a Unified Police officer who was helping control the scene suffered minor smoke inhalation, Mecham said. They were treated and released at the scene, he added.
The first home is uninhabitable for the time being, so the American Red Cross is helping the displaced trio, Mecham said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
