A man was in extremely critical condition Thursday, the day after his Ford Ranger pickup slammed into the back of a slow moving semitrailer on Interstate 15.

Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Lawrence Hopper said the crash occurred just after 9 p.m. Wednesday north of Farmington, near mile post 328. The pickup truck was believed to be speeding when it came up behind the semitrailer, which was going about 40 mph.

The Ford Ranger hit the rear of the semitrailer. The driver's side of the pickup was crushed, pinning the driver inside the wreckage. Firefighters freed the man, who was flown to Ogden Regional Hospital.

Speed and inattentiveness by the victim appeared to be the primary contributors in the crash, Hopper said.
