An 18-month-old was expected to recover Wednesday morning after he fell two stories out of an apartment complex window in Salt Lake County.

Unified Fire Authority Capt. Cliff Burningham said the boy was leaning against an open window while standing on a couch inside a second-floor apartment at Park Place Commons, 875 W. 3900 South, when the screen gave way and he fell out.

Burningham said the boy landed on a patch of grass that was wet from a recent watering, providing a softer landing.

He was transported to Primary Children's Medical Center with head injuries, he said. Burningham said it appeared the child would survive.

He said authorities believe the incident was an accident. However, he said it should serve as a reminder to parents to keep furniture away from windows so that children can't climb up to access to windows. He said people should also make check that their windows are safe and secure.
