With the commitment of East High's Parker Van Dyke to the Utes, several of the top level 2013 basketball prospects in Utah are now locked down, including Lone Peak's Nick Emery and Eric Mika headed to BYU.
But there is at least one remaining 2013 guard locals should keep an eye on: Brighton's Brandon Miller.
The 6-foot-2 guard was one of the leading scorers in the state last season, scoring 21.6 points per game and leading the Bengals to the championship game before falling to Lone Peak. The younger brother of Harvard sharpshooter Corbin Miller is now out of the shadows — officially he has offers to go to most of the Ivy League schools and UC-Davis, but he's continuing to talk with Utah, Stanford, Arizona State and Notre Dame among others.
"My plan right now is to let things play out and start narrowing down my options in a month or so," Miller says. "I'd like to make a decision this fall."
Miller is playing for his father, Bret Miller, on the Salt Lake Prospects AAU team. The club is scheduled to head to several tournaments in July, headlined by the Las Vegas Fab 48. This month, he's been working with his Brighton teammates, and the Bengals are scheduled to go to Utah team camp this week, host their own camp, then go to Dixie State.
Miller has also been to Utah's Elite camp, and says he might visit others. He's working on honing all aspects of his game.
"I can always work on my shot, so I'm doing that a little bit," he said. "I don't think there's one big thing I need to work on, so I'm just working on everything."
Colleges are envisioning Miller as a combo guard, but he might play more point, he said. The 17-year-old also added he'd prefer to go on an LDS Church mission before he goes to college, but could be flexible.
Utah has not officially offered Miller, and he said the coaching staff wants to be sure that he would be ready to commit. But Van Dyke's commitment on Monday hasn't influenced the school's interest in him — and he says he'd be comfortable playing in the same backcourt with him.
"Parker and I grew up playing together, superleagues and all that," Miller said. "It hasn't changed anything about my relationship with Utah. They said the interest in me hasn't gone down."
