Letter: Saved by white privilege

(John Minchillo | AP file photo) A giant "BLACK LIVES MATTER" sign is painted on Fulton Street, Monday, June 15, 2020, in the Brooklyn borough of New York.

I was 26 years old in June 1975 when my U-Haul truck broke down, totally blocking the driveway of a Shoney’s Restaurant in Memphis, Tenn. A mechanic made emergency repairs and after a few hours I was able to move the truck from the driveway and get back on the road. Police were never called.

On June 12, according to Atlanta police, Rayshard Brooks, age 27, was sleeping in a parked vehicle in a Wendy’s restaurant’s drive-thru lane, forcing cars to drive around. Police were summoned and ultimately shot him dead.

Did white privilege spare my life 45 years ago?
