Letter: Trump was never a great deal-maker

(Carlos Barria | The Associated Press) President Donald Trump speaks from the Oval Office of the White House as he gives a prime-time address about border security Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2018, in Washington.

The media coverage of the Trump campaign rallies gave him valuable publicity and added to the illusion of Donald Trump, the rich businessman. Trump was never a great deal-maker, and the shutdown proves it.

Trump declared bankruptcy six times and now he says that he is “proud” to shut down the government for border security. What a way to run a company.

Sixty percent of the people oppose the wall, but he wants to build it as a monument to his ego. Against fierce opposition, he wants to declare a national emergency at the border.

Illegal immigration is at its lowest level in over 10 years. Six suspected terrorists were caught crossing the border in the first half of 2018. Where is the crisis?

Most undocumented people enter legally and overstay their visas. A wall won’t change that.

Trump thinks he can bypass Congress and use military funding to build the wall. He can’t rule by executive fiat and he can’t order military personnel to build a wall.

He pretends that he understands how federal workers feel to go without pay. Trump is not one of them and he does not feel empathy for anyone! He thinks that they agree “100 percent” with his shutdown tactic.

He is backed against a proverbial wall and he has no plan to proceed. Maybe he will take credit for the longest shutdown ever.
