Letter: Tax relief legislation ranks among the greatest travesties ever perpetrated

The Capitol is seen in Washington, Monday, July 31, 2017. Most Senate Democrats and independents said Aug. 1, that upcoming legislation to rewrite the tax code should make sure the middle class doesn’t pay more. They won’t support any upcoming GOP effort to overhaul the U.S. tax code that delivers tax cuts to “the top 1 percent” or adds to the government’s $20 trillion debt. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

I just received my pay statement reflecting application of the tax relief legislation to my particular circumstance.

As I consider my part of this wonderful Christmas gift to the American people, I applaud the accuracy of the Tax Policy Center estimate of the effects of the legislation as applied to the various income levels of the citizenry, and as published in The Tribune back in December 2017. They missed my amount by $1.30. That being said, I assume their estimates overall are pretty accurate.

This leads to the realization that, roughly speaking, an income earner making 20 times what I make (who doesn’t really need any tax break) gets a tax reduction 80 times the amount I am receiving.

It also leads to the realization that this tax relief legislation has to rank up there as being among the greatest travesties ever perpetrated against the poor and middle classes.

There must be good reasons that we go about electing representatives who mindlessly follow the White House lead in this and other matters. I don’t know what they are.
