I spent time recently roaming the newly designated Bears Ears National Monument. I have never wandered more beautiful lands anywhere. These lands, sacred to many Native American peoples, should also be sacred to us, the late-invading settlers.

When I read the commentary by Sen. Orrin Hatch suggesting the establishment of the new monument was a "land grab," I found his words inflammatory and derogatory. It is simply impossible for the United States government to "grab" lands we already own. These lands belong to everyone in this country. These are America's lands, Sen. Hatch.

Unfortunately, I do not "pay to play" among the members of our Utah delegation. I am just a citizen. No ties to oil, gas, mining, grazing. Hatch has always been quick to do the bidding of these industries, even those that are not his constituents, as they donate to his campaigns to pay him to take their side. The majority of Utahns favor the new monument, Sen. Hatch.

You are out of touch.
