A 150-acre wildfire was burning Wednesday evening in marshes on the eastern shore of Utah Lake, fire authorities said.
The blaze was on state land and burning through grasses covering deep mud and water near the lake shore, said Jason Curry, spokesman for the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands. Several engines and a Utah County Sheriff's Office boat were at the scene, but containing the blaze was challenging due to the location, he said.
Curry said the fire was not immediately threatening structures or private property. If it moves onto more solid ground, it also would be easier to fight, he said. The fire was expected to die down Wednesday night and pick back up Thursday morning.
The blaze is under investigation, though Curry said someone had been burning on nearby agricultural land earlier in the day, which may have provided the spark. Fires in marshes on Utah Lake are fairly common, he said. The primary fuel is an invasive reed known as phragmites.
