Police say a 1 1/2-year-old boy left in a hot car on Sunday in Herriman is expected to recover.

The baby, who had been flown to Primary Children's Hospital in critical condition, was later upgraded to fair condition, Lt. Lex Bell of the Unified Police Department said.

Bell said the mother had gotten ill at church and drove to her home near 4900 W. 13900 South with the baby, When she got home, she forgot the child was in the car and went inside, he said.

When the father arrived home about 2 1/2 hours later, he found the baby in a car seat inside the vehicle, which was parked in the driveway with its windows rolled up, according to Bell.

Paramedics, who were dispatched to the scene shortly before 3 p.m., said the boy had a temperature of 105 degrees and his breathing was shallow.

The temperature in the Salt Lake City area had reached 90 degrees by mid afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Bell said the temperature in the car was measured at 154 degrees.

UPD has not released who found the child or the identities of the people involved. The incident is under investigation but is believed to be an accident, Bell said.
