Orem • The City Council adopted an ordinance amendment to prohibit food trucks from being on public streets within 1,000 feet of Scera Park during Orem's annual Summerfest, June 7-11.

This ban was imposed last year around City Center Park during the festival and was extended to Scera Park with Tuesday night's unanimous vote. There was little discussion and no one from the public raised the issue.

City officials reasoned, in part, that allowing food trucks so near the festivities was unfair to vendors who purchased a concession space for $500. Summerfest also allows those vendors to purchase a tag allowing them to sell food along the parade route for an additional $100.

Summerfest is the most popular event of the year sponsored by the city, according to organizers. It features a variety of activities and entertainment, from storytelling to fireworks to kids' crafts to car shows and a long list of live music and dance performers on stage.

In addition to protecting the fee-paying food concessions from competition — preventing "food trucks from taking advantage of the economic opportunity created by Summerfest without sharing the costs" — the city said the food truck prohibition would keep more parking open for patrons and prevent food-truck customer lines from obstructing pedestrian traffic in the area.
