A two-alarm fire destroyed the former Silver Cup factory in Murray on Saturday and created smoke that was visible across the valley.
Crews were dispatched about 9:15 a.m. to the historical structure at 118 W. 4800 South, most recently where Nelson and Sons used to manufacture Silver Cup fish feed.
The brick-faced building, which was constructed in 1909 with treated wood, had been empty since the business moved to Tooele several years ago, according to Murray Deputy Fire Marshal Pat Killian.
He said passers-by first saw the fire and ran to nearby Fire Station 81 to report it.
The fire was extinguished by mid-afternoon, Killian said. Equipment was being brought in to knock down what remained of the structure, he said.
The blaze shut down TRAX in the area. The Utah Transit Authority said it has a bus bridge in place from Millcreek to the Murray Central stations.
In early 2015, the building, originally the Bennion Flour and Feed Mill, was submitted for consideration for the National Register of Historic Places. The application states that the building "has good historic integrity and is a
contributing resource within Murray's historic industrial corridor."
The cause of the blaze has not been determined. Anyone with information regarding the fire is asked to call 801-840-4000.
