A bicyclist is in "extremely critical" condition after being struck by a car early Tuesday morning in South Salt Lake.

The crash happened around 3 a.m. in the intersection of 3300 South and 700 East.

South Salt Lake Police Lt. Gregg Carlson told KUTV that a Toyota Corolla traveling south on 700 East struck a bicyclist who was in a crosswalk traveling west. Carlson said the cyclist was taken to a local hospital and was in "extremely critical" condition as of 6 a.m.

Several lanes were closed early Tuesday as police investigated the scene, but officials believed the roads should be reopened around 7 a.m.
