A Midvale motorcyclist pleaded guilty on Monday to a reduced third-degree felony count of manslaughter in the death of his passenger in a 2013 traffic accident in South Jordan.

Luis Enrique Tovar, 33, was speeding on a motorcycle on Aug. 10, 2013, on 3200 West near 10950 South when he illegally passed another motorist in the center lane and crashed, according to charges filed in 3rd District Court.

Tovar's passenger, 29-year-old Tara Nicole Sheppick, died at a hospital.

Neither was wearing a helmet, police have said.

In exchange for Tovar's plea, prosecutors dismissed three class C misdemeanor traffic offenses — including speeding at 58 mph in a 30 mph zone.

He faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced April 27 by Judge Charlene Barlow.
