It's not just, spit on a police car and you go to jail.

Hock a loogie on that cruiser, trespass on private property, assault police officers, try to pull a knife on them — and then you're off to the Gray Bar Hotel.

The expectorial drama began at 7:20 p.m. Saturday in the 400 South block of 400 West when an officer saw the 23-year-old suspect express his wet disdain. When officers ordered him to stop, he instead bolted onto posted private property; when further confronted, he allegedly charged police.

According to a jail probable cause statement, it took four officers to wrestle the 6-foot, 230-pound man to the ground. At one point, officers found he was grasping an open pocket knife as they attempted to handcuff him. After further struggle, he was disarmed and placed in both hand and leg restraints.

However, once placed in the back of a patrol car, the suspect repeatedly head-butted a side window until it broke.

An ambulance was called, and with two officers riding along, the suspect was taken to the hospital, treated for head lacerations and then booked into the Salt Lake County jail.

The man was still behind bars Monday, held in lieu of nearly $12,000 bail on suspicion of third-degree counts of aggravated assault and damaging law enforcement property, as well as misdemeanor counts of criminal trespassing, resisting arrest and spitting in a public place.
