An 18-year-old man has died of his injuries after being struck by a car as he lay on a St. George street following a motor scooter crash Tuesday.

St. George police Officer Derek Lewis confirmed that Scott Wesley Jones had passed away at Dixie Regional Medical Center late Tuesday afternoon following the 6:50 a.m. accident near 700 South and 900 East.

Jones' scooter — eastbound on 700 South, a rain-slicked Interstate 15 underpass — reportedly went out of control and crashed, throwing its rider to the asphalt.

Though one approaching car stopped and its driver activated the vehicle's hazard lights, a second vehicle passed the stopped car and struck Jones.

The victim suffered severe head trauma, police said.

When a SGPD officer arrived on the scene, the first driver — the one who had stopped — had already left the scene. The second driver, who struck Jones, remained on scene.

No citations had been issued as the accident remained under investigation, Lewis said.
