A 15-year-old with a learner’s permit was driving his parents’ Ford Mustang in the fog and rain when he hit a man crossing a street in the dark on Monday night.
Jordan Heugly, 23, of Sandy, was crossing the street, but not in a crosswalk, when he was hit on 8000 South near 300 East at 10:12 p.m., according to Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke. The street isn’t well-lit in that area, Lohrke said, and Heugly was declared dead at the scene.
Heugly lived and worked in the area, Lohrke said, adding that police believe he was walking to work at the time of the crash.
The 15-year-old driver has a learner’s permit, and a passenger — a 16-year-old girl who isn’t related to the driver — was in the car at the time of the crash, Lohrke said.
Utah law requires that drivers with a learner’s permit who are 15, 16 and 17 years old must have an approved driving instructor, or parent or legal guardian who is licensed, occupying the passenger seat of the car.
Potential charges haven’t yet been determined in connection with the learner’s permit law, police said.
Police also are investigating whether weather or speed contributed to the crash.
