Search on for missing airplane in northern Utah

Sheriff’s deputies on Saturday were looking for a missing airplane along an edge of the Great Salt Lake.

The small airplane — a red and white Cessna 172, tail number N4395R — took off from Ogden Hinckley Airport about 3:30 p.m. Friday. Pilot Denny Mansell, 71, and passenger Peter Ellis, 74, planned to fly to the Promontory area to see the trains at the Golden Spike National Historic Site, according to a news release from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office.

The pair should have returned to Ogden approximately an hour later. Family called 911 about 9:20 p.m. that night to report the missing plane.

Sheriff’s deputies and a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter scoured the Promontory area from Friday night until early Saturday. A search and rescue team was dispatched at sunrise Saturday, and other groups joined them in the search throughout the day, according to the release.

The search halted at sundown Saturday. It is scheduled to resume Sunday morning.
