Police: Pedestrian was not in crosswalk when he was struck and killed on Redwood Road

A 53-year-old man died after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing Redwood Road on Friday morning.

The crash happened at about 7 a.m. as Homero Lara-Chicato was crossing the road near 6200 South in Taylorsville, according to Unified Police Detective Ken Hansen.

Lara-Chicato was not in a crosswalk, Hansen said, and was crossing against a green light when he was struck by a northbound vehicle and landed near a UTA bus that was stopped.

Hansen said investigators believe the man was running across the road to possibly catch the bus.

Lara-Chicato was taken to a local hospital, according to police, where he died from his injuries.

Hansen said the police investigation will continue on Friday, including speaking with the driver who struck the man. The detective noted that it was dark when the man was hit, and the pedestrian was also wearing dark clothing.
