A 9-year-old girl remains in critical condition after being struck by a truck in South Jordan on Tuesday while crossing the street.
The girl, along with two other children, were crossing 5510 West along 11800 South at 5:15 p.m. when the incident occurred. The children were using a crosswalk with the pedestrian light signaling it was safe to cross when a truck turning left onto 11800 South hit two of the three children.
The 9-year-old was flown by helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center in critical condition. South Jordan police Sgt. Sam Winkler said Wednesday she was still in critical condition but was stable and her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
An 8-year-old boy sustained minor injuries and the other child was not injured, Winkler said.
Winkler said the driver, a 61-year-old man, had a green light but not a green arrow indicating right of way. He remained on scene and cooperated with police, saying he did not see the children. He was cited for failure to yield to pedestrians.
Winkler said accidents like this provide an opportunity to reflect on driving practices.
“Take that extra second and look not just for cars, but for pedestrians that might be crossing the street,” he said.
