A Duchesne County sheriff’s dog suffering from terminal cancer was euthanized Tuesday and buried with honors.
Sheriff David Boren said the 2-year-old female German shepherd, Q, had been medically retired last month following the diagnosis. The K-9 had earlier had an eye removed as the cancer spread, but further treatments failed.
Sheriff’s Cpl. Moran Harrison. Q’s partner, cared for the dog as the disease soon robbed the dog of sight in its remaining eye. Q also lost the ability to walk and the sheriff’s office determined it was time to end her suffering.
Q was buried on Harrison’s farm Tuesday evening in a casket built by inmates from the Duchesne County jail’s Building Trades program.
“I’ve been deeply touched by the outpouring of support from people in Duchesne County and beyond following our announcement of Q’s cancer diagnosis,” Boren said. “The support and offers of assistance we’ve received in the past four days have helped sustain Cpl. Harrison and his family during this difficult time, and have been a huge comfort to the men and women of the sheriff’s office.”
Q’s death leaves the sheriff’s office with one remaining K-9, a Belgian Malinois handled by Sgt. Jared Harrison.
