Bundle up and be careful on the roads this weekend — a winter storm is headed for northern Utah.

The National Weather Service predicts snow will start falling Saturday night in the far northern part of the state first, then spread south throughout north Utah during the day on Sunday. Be prepared: The storm has the potential of slamming the state with a lot of snow, sleet or ice accumulations that could impact travel.

Snow accumulations this weekend are expected to be 7 to 14 inches in the Wasatch Plateau and Book Cliffs; 3 to 8 inches in the the Wasatch Mountain valleys; and 8 to 16 inches in the Wasatch Mountains south of I-80 and in the western Uinta Mountains.

About 3 to 6 inches of accumulation is predicted along the Wasatch Front, including Logan, Brigham City, Bountiful, Salt Lake City, Tooele, Lehi and Provo. Greater amounts of snow are expected to pile up in the bench and foothill areas.

Highs on the weekend are predicted to range from near 20 to the low 30s in much of northern Utah and the lows from about 0 in the mountains to the 20s in other areas.

A winter storm watch for northern Utah that begins Saturday night will be in effect through Monday morning.
