Police on Friday were looking for a driver suspected of shooting at a Utah Highway Patrol trooper, who was not hit.

The trooper was looking for a reckless driver he had been alerted to on southbound Interstate 215, and found the suspected vehicle about 2:30 p.m. Friday near Valley Fair Mall at 3500 South, said UHP Capt. Steve Winward.

The trooper tried to stop the red Subaru, but the driver did not immediately comply.

But soon after, the Subaru turned down the 3500 South on-ramp in the wrong direction, Winward said. After the Subaru pulled over to the side of the ramp, the female driver tried to run away, he added.

The trooper got out and struggled with the woman — which is when a black two-door Honda also came down the onramp against traffic and the male driver fired at the trooper through his passenger window, Winward said. The bullet missed, and the Honda took off down the off ramp and toward the mall, the captain said.

The trooper never returned fire.

Troopers, with the help of West Valley City police officers, were looking for the driver of the reportedly stolen Honda, which has a damaged passenger window. Police did not have a license plate number for the vehicle.

Investigators believe the driver was the only one in the Honda, and that he may have known the woman, Winward said.

The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries suffered during her scuffle with the trooper, Winward said. The Subaru she was driving had also been reported stolen, the captain added.

The 3500 South on-ramp to southbound I-215 is closed for the investigation, according to the Utah Department of Transportation. There is no estimate on when the on-ramp will re-open.
