Roy police on Wednesday identified the man who was killed by officers during a prolonged standoff with the armed and distraught man on Tuesday, a case detectives continued to investigate as a probable case of suicide-by-cop.

Roy police Detective Matt Gwynn said 35-year-old Jose Calzada was shot to death at a home near 3800 West and 5300 South, where he was a resident.

Gwynn said the incident began about 4 a.m. Tuesday when officers responded to a 911 call, itself reportedly generated by the man's call to a suicide hotline.

Roy officers who discovered the man was barricaded inside the home were soon joined by the Weber Metro SWAT unit, which attempted to negotiate the man's surrender for more than six hours.

The sequence of events leading up to officers fatally shooting the man were unclear Wednesday and still under investigation, but about half a dozen gunshots erupted about 11:15 a.m. Tuesday.

As is protocol for such situations, at least two police officers — a specific number was not immediately released — were placed on administrative leave pending review of the shooting by the Weber County Attorney's Office.

Gwynn said that because the case had been turned over to the county attorney's office, no further information was available for release.
