A 19-year-old man suspected of fatally shooting a Holladay man on Saturday during a burglary attempt at the victim's apartment has been arrested, the Unified Police Department says.

Damian Antonio Garcia, who was booked into Salt Lake County jail on Tuesday, also is accused of pistol whipping someone at the apartment and of shooting the homicide victim's son in the hand.

The father, who died at the apartment, has been identified as 46-year-old Darrin Jackson. The man's son is 26-year-old Jonathan Jackson, who was expected to recover from the hand injury.

According to a probable cause statement. Garcia admitted being part of a group of seven or eight males who forced their way into the apartment near 1800 E. 4900 South at about 2:10 a.m Saturday.

A fight broke out and Garcia was pistol whipping someone when he was struck in the back, "at which point he fired two shots at one male which resulted in his death," the probable cause statement says.

Garcia then allegedly fired at Jonathan Jackson, who was hit in the left hand and later underwent surgery.

The probable cause statement says Garcia has admitted to the killing.

Garcia was booked into jail on suspicion of murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, aggravated burglary and violation of parole or probation.

Court records show a 3rd District judge on June 5, 2015, sentenced Garcia to 214 days in jail and three years of probation for the gang-related crime of felony discharge of a firearm and aggravated assault.

He was charged last September with aggravated robbery and has pleaded not guilty to the crime, according to court records.
