Crews began installing Harvey Milk Boulevard street signs Friday in Salt Lake City, commemorating the gay-rights advocate and community leader with an official renaming of 900 South.
Jackie Biskupski, the city's first opening gay mayor, joined workers from the Salt Lake City Streets Division as they hung signs between 800 East and 1100 East in preparation for Saturday celebration of the San Francisco politician, gunned down in 1978.
The Salt Lake City Council approved a resolution renaming a 20-block stretch of the street after Milk in mid-April.
A city spokesperson said crews would install the signs along remaining portions of 900 South "in the next few weeks."
