An 18-month-old boy died Sunday morning at Primary Children's Hospital after his stepfather allegedly tried to drown him in the bathtub while his mother was at work.

The stepfather, Codey Jolley, 28, called 911 at 8:50 p.m. on Friday, telling dispatchers that he left the baby boy, Ethan Antes, sitting up in the bathtub and performed a series of household chores, including loading the dishwasher, washing a shirt and cooking a burrito, before he remembered to check on the child.

When he returned to the bathroom, Jolley said Antes was floating face-down in the water, said Unified Police Lt. Lex Bell on Saturday. Jolley said he attempted CPR and called 911.

When paramedics arrived, the child was unconscious and not breathing, but had a pulse. He was flown from the home, near 400 East and 4100 South in Millcreek, to the hospital, where he died Sunday at 9:52 a.m.

The boy also had trauma from previous injuries he had suffered while in Jolley's sole care. Three weeks ago, Antes suffered first- and second-degree burns when, Jolley told police, "the child had spilled scalding coffee on his head and upper torso," according to a probable cause statement filed with the Salt Lake County Jail.

Jolley also said the child had fallen from his high chair on Tuesday, which left bruising on the right side of his face.

Bell said that after doctors examined the child, they determined that the injuries didn't match up with Jolley's story.

Jolley was questioned and booked on suspicion of attempted child abuse homicide, a first-degree felony, and child abuse, a third-degree felony. Upon Antes' death, Jolley's charges were amended to child abuse homicide, a first-degree felony.
