You just never know how the spotlight is going to affect a child star.

For every Selena Gomez, there's a Lindsay Lohan. For every Taylor Swift, there's a Britney Spears with a shaved head. Justin Bieber is working on veering from the Charlie Sheen path to find the redemption Robert Downey Jr. has earned.

While the Biebs may not have the drug-use issues of those men, he has gone from that Canadian cutie to international bad boy. Now, as he brings his Purpose World Tour to Salt Lake City on Saturday, April 2, he's working his way back into fans' hearts with what basically amounts to his apology tour — which is pretty amazing considering the pop star just turned 22 on March 1.

Ahead of his sold-out show, here's a look at the highlights (and lowlights) of Bieber's career so far.

Hollywood

Bieber has played a few characters in television and film. His character Jason McCann on "CSI" had two appearances, first in 2010 as a troubled teen running with a rough crowd, who on his second appearance in 2011 is revealed as a bomber mastermind. In that subsequent show, he is shot dead in a very bloody standoff with CSI. Reminiscent of that death was his recent appearance in "Zoolander 2," where, in a much less bloody fashion, Bieber is knocked off at the start of the film.

Many parents will remember taking their Belieber children to watch his two documentaries "Never Say Never" in 2011 and "Justin Bieber's Believe" in 2013. He also had a 10-second cameo on "The Simpsons" as he was denied entry to a 10-and-younger talent competition. Those moments, of course, were before all of the controversy began erupting.

Selena Gomez

Bieber and Gomez were one of the hottest young Hollywood couples for a long time. They announced their relationship in March 2011 after months of dating rumors. Three years later, their breakup was just as rife with rumors. On Nov. 19, 2013, Gomez appeared on the "Late Show with David Letterman" shortly after Bieber had appeared. Letterman told Gomez he had made the young star cry. "That makes two of us," was Gomez's response.

Fast forward several months when Gomez released the gut-wrenching "The Heart Wants What It Wants," an ode she said was about Bieber, in 2014. In November 2015, he serenaded her with "Sorry" and a cover of "My Girl" at a Los Angeles Hotel. He's been posting several Throwback Thursday photos of the couple together, and while both have been spotted dating other people, it seems the two just can't quit each other.

Legal troubles

In November 2013, Bieber found himself in trouble for spray-painting a building in Brazil while on tour. On that same tour, he also spray-painted a wall along a busy road in Bogotá, Colombia. He didn't end up serving any jail time, which was a possibility, but instead paid a fine.

In January 2014, Bieber was arrested for drunk driving and street racing in Miami. He was fined and had to complete community service.

That prompted a citizen petition to the White House to deport Bieber. More than 273,000 people signed in support. The White House thanked people for taking an interest in U.S. immigration issues, but didn't deport the pop star.

Apparently, that movement didn't curb Bieber's bad behavior. In November 2014, he ended up paying $80,900 in restitution to his neighbor in Calabasas after egging a multimillion-dollar mansion. Bieber eventually moved, selling his home to Khloe Kardashian.

Taking responsibility

Bieber stayed out of the public eye for a while after the legal issues plagued him. He made one of his first public appearances in January 2015 on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on the host's birthday. It was a rocky start. He ended up issuing an apology video to fans.

"I was afraid of what people are thinking of me right now," he said. "I didn't want to come off as arrogant or conceited. I'm not who I was pretending to be. I want people to know how much I care. … I'm a person who genuinely cares."

At the end of March, he was roasted on Comedy Central, which was a turning point for the young man. It marked the moment when he faced up to his behavior and began to own his mistakes.

His redemption tour has begun. Apparently, it's working. Bieber just became the first artist in the history of video website Vevo to hit 10 billion views in the 6.3 years he's been on the site. One billion of those views happened since he started rolling out content from his "Purpose" album.

Now, fans will have to wait to see how he handles his fame as a 20-something.
